UEFA Champions League
Result: Roma 0-2 Man City
Date: 10 December 2014
Venue: Stadio Olimpico
Manchester City progressed to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League after a 2-0 win on the road at Roma on Wednesday night.
The hosts came close to taking the lead in only the fifth minute. Holebas was in space when he collected the ball on the left flank. He then cut inside onto his right foot and attempted a low shot. It came close to beating Joe Hart but he made enough contact to slow down the ball, allowing Martin Demichelis to clear.
A swift break from Roma in the 21st minute saw Gervinho force Hart into a top save. The Ivory Coast international moved into space on the right flank and sent a shot across goal towards the far corner but Hart got his fingertips to the ball just in time.
City had a good chance five minutes before the break. Navas picked out James Milner with an inch-perfect through-ball that he steered towards goal but De Sanctis was there to make the vital block.
The deadlock was finally broken on the hour mark. The build-up play from City did not suggest that there would be much of a threat for Roma to deal with, but Samir Nasri made the most of it as he arrowed a shot in off the post to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
The result and City's passage into the last 16 was secured in the 86th minute as Pablo Zabaleta added the visitors' second. Nasri held the ball up well just inside the area before sliding it to the Argentine who placed it in the bottom corner of the goal.
