Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has departed his role as assistant Sporting Director with immediate effect.
The 36-year-old spent 15 years with the club as a player, before taking on his role under Andoni Zubizarreta following his retirement last July.
However, Zubizarreta was sacked last night and, even though Puyol appeared to be the man to take over the former 53-year-old’s role, the legendary defender announced last night that he has left the club.
“With this statement I want to announce that I have decided to end my employment with Football Club Barcelona,” he said via Facebook.
He also took the opportunity to thank the club, before stating that he hopes to return in the future.
“These three-and-a-half months have given me the opportunity to see the other side of the club. I learned a lot, I’m very grateful and now I would like to experience other things from another perspective and elsewhere.
“I want to grow both personally and professionally so that, in the future, hopefully someday I can return and give back everything you have given me during these unforgettable years.”
Puyol’s exodus from the club could be the first of many, after the club was banned from all transfer activity by FIFA for their misconduct in operations with players under the age of 18 and several players have reportedly indicated that they intend to depart the club.
