Interim Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink believes the club need a huge summer of recruitment before they can start to seriously challenge Europe’s elite again.
The Blues, who lost 2-1 to Paris St Germain in the Champions League last-16 first leg in midweek, have found this season incredibly tough and remain 20 points behind league leaders Leicester.
Hiddink, who is unbeaten in the league since taking over from Jose Mourinho in December, believes the club need a big summer of rebuilding and claimed a glance at the two substitute benches on Tuesday highlighted the difference between the two teams.
PSG had the luxury of naming Benjamin Stambouli, Edinson Cavani, Javier Pastore and Gregory van der Weil as back up, while Hiddink had Kenedy, Bertrand Traore, Loic Remy and Matt Miazga sat in reserve.
Hiddink said: “It’s not a small job. Everyone, in terms of the weakness of the squad, must react accordingly to make the squad stronger next season – that’s not a small job.
“If you see the potential of those clubs (Barcelona, Real and Bayern), it’s huge. To be honest PSG have a very strong team, they can (pick from) 15, 16 or 17 international players.
“We had youngsters on the bench against PSG. I am not scared to bring them in, but in the long run you need a very experienced bench.
“I am here in the interim period, but the people who are here every day, every week and stuff, have the longer vision of what is needed. They are in charge so that they can do that.”
