Saturday’s fixtures of Week 3 of the 2014/15 Barclays Premier League season have produced a number of brilliant football matches around England.
Stoke City caused an early-season upset by defeating reigning champions Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium courtesy of a sublime goal from summer signing Mame Biram Diouf.
The former Manchester United striker advanced from inside Stoke’s half before sliding the ball through the legs of Joe Hart in the 58th minute to give the Potters their first away win over City since 1980.
Top flight returnees Burnley provided more woe for Louis van Gaal’s beginning as Manchester United boss by holding the Red Devils to a 0-0 draw at Turf Moor.
United were poor against the Clarets, stretching van Gaal’s winless streak to four matches, and £59.7million signing Angel Di Maria also limped off injured in the second half which compacted the less than desirable result even further.
Newcastle United and Crystal Palace played out a six-goal thriller at St James’ Park which ended in a 3-3 draw after Eagles loanee Wilfried Zaha netted a very late equaliser.
Dwight Gayle carried on from his Capital One Cup hat-trick midweek by scoring in the opening minute before Daryl Janmaat opened his account for the Magpies after joining from Feyenoord earlier in the summer.
Jason Puncheon put aside his differences with new Palace manager Neil Warnock to hand Palace the lead early in the second half before the Toon went 3-2 ahead thanks to goals from youngster Rolando Aarons and defender Mike Williamson.
But the Londoners had the last laugh as United winger Zaha, who has returned to the club on loan, struck in the 95th minute to land Palace a first point of the campaign.
Charlie Austin scored his first Premier League goal as QPR edgedSunderland 1-0 at Loftus Road while Nathan Dyer took his season tally to three by scoring a brace in Swansea City’s 3-0 home win overWest Bromwich Albion.
Wayne Routledge was also on target as Garry Monk’s Swans made it three wins from three matches to kick off the season in fine style by temporarily going top of the table.
Southampton fell behind before recovering to a 3-1 win at West Ham United, giving Ronald Koeman his first Premier League win as manager of the south coast outfit.
Mark Noble gave the Hammers the lead just before the half-hour mark before Morgan Schneiderlin, who the Saints managed to hold onto after a summer exodus, netted a brace and Graziano Pelle opened his English top flight account to wrap it up at the end.
And in an exhilarating match to finish off Saturday’s action, Chelsea defeated Everton 6-3 at Goodison Park in a blistering affair.
Diego Costa and Branislav Ivanovic gave Jose Mourinho’s a two-goal lead by the third minute before Kevin Mirallas responded for the home side on the stroke of half-time.
An own-goal from Seamus Coleman, after a dazzling run from Eden Hazard, restored Chelsea’s advantage before Steven Naismith scored his third in three games to cut back the deficit to just one goal.
Nemanja Matic then powered home past Tim Howard in the 74th minute before ex-Blues striker Samuel Eto’o scored on his Toffees debut within moments of entering the pitch.
However, the Everton revival was short-lived when Ramires toe-poked in a fifth for the visitors prior to Costa sublimely finishing his second of the day – and fourth of the campaign – to give Chelsea a third straight victory which moves them to the summit of the Premier League.
Sunday’s fixtures will see Aston Villa host Hull City, Liverpool travel to Tottenham and Leicester City at home to Arsenal.
