The Oscars awards ceremony in Los Angeles brings together the great and good of world cinema—and now, for some reason, Sir Alex Ferguson.
The former Manchester United manager was in town for the 2014 ceremony and when asked by Sky News on the red carpet why he was there, the 72-year-old joked: “I’m retired, I’ve nothing to do!”
He said he was also on a mission to meet the ‘great’ Daniel Day-Lewis as he made a surprise appearance at the Oscars in Los Angeles.
My friend Martin, my lawyer, said you must go to the Oscars some time, so I got this opportunity.
“I am hoping to meet Daniel Day Lewis. He’s a great actor.”
Ferguson said he thought the Oscars judges had made the right choices in picking 12 Years a Slave for best film and Matthew McConaughey as best leading actor.
Ferguson also promised Manchester United fans that the club would be ‘alright’ under the charge of new manager David Moyes.
The Scot was speaking about United’s poor season for the first time.
“They will be alright,” said the Scot, who stepped down in the summer after 27 years as United boss. “It’s early days and there have been a lot of changes.
“I was there for 27 years so with a new manager, it takes time. But they will be okay.”
