Today, we begin our list of the ten best captains in the history of football. We rank some of the greatest leaders that the game has ever seen.

The Irish hot-head is hailed by many as one of the most influential figures that the game has ever seen and, despite his temper, his teammates were always willing to give their all under his leadership. Thanks to his influence, the Red Devils won an incredible amount of trophies during his 12-year spell at the club.

The 34-year-old has been a pillar of the Chelsea defence for over a decade and has established himself as one of the strongest centre-backs in the game. His leadership as club captain has seen his club win numerous trophies over the years, even though he arrived when the club was not as big as it is today.
8. Steven Gerrard
Gerrard may not be seeing the best form these days, due to his age, but his love for the club is incredible and he is one of the most loyal players in the game. He is an inspiration to the players around him and players and fans at the club alike all adore him.
7. Paolo Maldini
Easily one of the most influential figures that the game has ever seen, Maldini spent 31 years at AC Milan and 24 in the first team. He oversaw five Champions League wins with the team and is one of the best left-backs that the game has ever seen.
6. Carles Puyol
The former Barcelona captain is another player that showed incredible leadership, with a unique sense of duty. He was a product of the famed La Masia youth academy and was an ever-present in Barcelona’s great, successful team for over a decade.
These guys have done incredible jobs in helping their teams come together as a unit. And they are all legends!
