Uruguayan football executive Eugenio Figueredo, a FIFA vice-president, has hinted at the possibility of reopening the case into Barcelona striker Luis Suárez’s suspension for his bite on Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup.
“When a little more time has passed we are going to look at how, politically, this punishment can be softened a little”, Figueredo said.
“When a little more time has passed we are going to look at how, politically, this punishment can be softened a little”, Figueredo said.
According to Figueredo, a former CONMEBOL president who joined FIFA following the death of Argentinian Julio Grondona, “the fact that his ban wasn’t initially reduced on appeal means that it was based on very solid foundations, which were impenetrable from all angles”.
To begin with, Suárez’s punishment consisted of a four-month ban from all football-related activity, plus a nine-game international suspension. Following Barcelona’s appeal to the CAS, the striker was allowed to resume training with his club and to feature in non-competitive matches, so he has recently turned out for Barça B in friendlies.
Though Suárez missed Uruguay’s September exhibition games against Japan and Korea, he has been included in Óscar Tabárez’s squad for the upcoming clashes in Saudi Arabia and Oman on 10th and 13th October. However, unless his ban is reduced, he will be unable to play for his country in competitive action until next year and will be forced to sit out the Copa América.
