When Bafana Bafana touch down at OR Tambo International Airport later today, they deserve nothing less than a warm reception for their soldiering performances the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.
Coach Shakes Mashaba approached the showpiece with his ever changing selection of lesser favoured players that served him so well since his appointment as head coach of the national team.
Unfortunately, things went pear-shaped in central Africa as we endured two disappointing losses which were sandwiched by a less than warranted draw.
We can, however, take to heart from the fact that the boys did not crash out because they performed badly. With the level of performances we displayed, we clearly deserved to win at least two games, but it was not to be. Mashaba should be commended for championing a philosophy more aligned with the Mzansi way of playing football, and instilling fearlessness in a relatively younger squad.
As Mashaba's mandate was to rebuild, this was a positive learning curve for the boys who will have learnt more about the importance of converting chances and maintaining discipline at the highest level.
