Cristiano Ronaldo’s ambition is confused with arrogance and the Portuguese deserves to win the Ballon d’Or, claims former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas.
Villas-Boas, who is currently coaching Zenit St. Petersburg, insisted Ronaldo doesn’t get as much respect as his long-standing rival Lionel Messi.
“I think sometimes drive and ambition of individuals should not be confused as arrogance, and sometimes Cristiano gets that tag on him,” Ronaldo’s countryman toldLaures, as quoted by Daily Mail.
“He is a bit 'chased' publicly in some way and I do not understand why, but I think this kind of phenomenon happens to him.
“Cristiano does not get that margin of respect that sometimes Messi does, but you know hopefully this determination and passion has shown that for this time round he deserves to win it.”
Ronaldo is the favourite to win this year’s Ballon d’Or title after scoring 63 goals in all competitions in 2014 and winning the Copa del Rey, the Champions League as well as the European Super Cup.
The FIFA Ballon d’Or gala will take place in Zurich on Monday, 12 January.
