In an effort to warm you up for the latest edition of the African Cup of Nations, which begins in one week, we take a look at five of the finest players that will be featuring at this year’s tournament.
Wilfried Bony (Ivory Coast)
Bony has 10 goals for club and country this season, but is more notably the highest scorer in the Premier League for the 2014 calendar year. His powerful style of play and impeccable finishing may earn him a move to Manchester City. You can bet that he will be one of the standout players in the star-studded Ivory Coast team, and if he hits his stride, there is little chance for any opposing defenders.
Serge Aurier (Ivory Coast)
Another player that you can be sure will be key for the Ivory Coast is PSG’s 22-year-old right-back, Serge Aurier, who is one of the finest young defenders in Africa, if not the world. He possesses extraordinary strength, he’s good in the air and he has tons of stamina to allow him to run any team ragged.
Yacine Brahimi (Algeria)
My personal choice for African Player of the Year 2014, Brahimi is incredibly talented, is gifted with great pace, incredible skill and a powerful shot. He’s certainly making a name for himself at Porto after being named as the best African in La Liga with Granada, which earned him a transfer to the Portuguese giants. In the Algerian team at this year’s tournament, he will be one of the biggest players to look out for.
Assamoah Gyan (Ghana)
Gyan is Ghana’s highest scorer of all time, with 45 goals in 86 caps and truly shines for his country, especially in major competitions. Recently, he’s scored eight goals in 10 appearances for his club, Al-Ain and country this season, so there’s no doubting his form. He will undoubtedly be a star name appearing at this year’s tournament and for good reason too!
Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast)
The Manchester City star may be the biggest names to be attending this year’s tournament and it’s obvious why. After a poor start, by his standards, to the season, he has really started to pick up momentum with his club lately and will undoubtedly be pivotal to the Ivory Coast’s efforts to win this year’s tournament.
There’s no doubting the sheer quality of all these players. They will definitely be great to watch when the AFCON gets underway.
