Michael Owen was announced as a Liverpool international ambassador on Thursday – and supporters took to Twitter to vent their frustration.
The former Liverpool striker ran down his contract to leave Anfield in 2004 for Real Madrid and then the Englishman returned home to play for Newcastle.
But it was the single-minded Owen’s next move that shattered his reputation in the eyes of many supporters as he agreed to join bitter rivals Manchester United.
Owen then won the Premier League title with United in 2011 and many Liverpool supporters have never quite forgiven the former academy graduate for this period in his career.
The appointment of Owen to a lucrative ambassadorial post was regarded on Thursday by many as a kick to the teeth despite his scoring exploits after graduating to the first team as a brilliant 17-year-old.
