New Manchester United signing Radamel Falcao with assistant coach Ryan Giggs
Radamel Falcao’s father has come out and said that Falcao joined Manchester United because Real Madrid were reluctant to spend money to sign him.
The Colombian striker who was at AS Monaco at the time was heavily linked to the European champions and looked all set to return to the La Liga.
But when a deal failed to materialize, Falcao went on to sign for the Red Devils.
Real Madrid chose not to buy: Falcao’s father
Falcao’s father Radamel García said, “The deal with Real Madrid did not happen because if you have money and you go to the market to buy a shirt or a pair of trousers, you have to decide whether to buy it or not,”
“Real Madrid chose not to. I don’t know, I have the feeling they wanted the player for free with a number of conditions.
“In any case, they bought the trousers and shirt they wanted and they considered that to be better. We have to accept it.”
Falcao had many clubs after his signature
Manchester United weren’t the only club after the 28-year-old. Rival clubs from the Premier League and Serie A were also in for him, according to his father.
“The clubs that showed an interest in him were Juventus, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal at the last minute,” García said.
“Fortunately, he has arrived to Manchester United, a great club. Thank God everything came through with United.
“Radamel is a person who has given a lot in Europe and has always deserved the best for all the effort, all the sacrifices he has made during his football career.
“United is the most important team in England and one of the most powerful from an economic standpoint. Now it’s his turn to give his best, to be ready and continue to win titles.”
Why Falcao left Monaco
Garcia also revealed why the Colombian striker left AS Monaco after just one year at the club.
“He was very happy at Monaco but unfortunately, they changed the original plan and decided to sell the players they had bought.” Monaco had already sold James Rodriguez to Real Madrid after the World Cup.
He only played half a season in Ligue 1 before a knee injury in January sidelined him for six months which made him miss the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
