Ronaldo reacts to Angel Di Maria getting the No.7 shirt at United

Manchester United revealed on their website that new signing Angel Di Maria will wear the No. 7 shirt. The Argentine winger completed a £59.7m move from Real Madrid and could make his debut away at Burnley FC this weekend.

The last player to wear the No.7 shirt for the Red Devils was Valencia in the 2012/13 season, but he switched back to No.25 last season, leaving it vacant. “I am aware of its importance,” Di Maria said. “Cristiano Ronaldo spoke to me at Real Madrid and explained how important it is.

I want to wear the shirt and do as much as I can for the club, like Ronaldo did. “The club also wanted me to wear the no.7 shirt and I hope I can live up to it.”

The famous No.7 shirt has been worn by club legends like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo himself. At the Champions League Group stage draw, where Ronaldo won the Best Player in Europe award, he wished Di Maria the best of luck at Manchester United and spoke about him getting the No.7 shirt.

“I wish him the best of luck. He deserves it, he is a fantastic player. “He’s going to be good, he’s going to do well in Manchester United. “And I said to him, ‘No.7 is a big responsibility’, but I think he will be able to take that shirt because he is a fantastic player.”
