Serena Williams Gets $4 Million As She Wins Her Sixth US Open Title

When Serena Williams won her sixth U.S. Open title on Sunday by beating Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3, she achieved an impressive career milestone: She is now tied with Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova for second most Grand Slam singles titles for a woman in the Open era. They each have 18, and trail only Steffi Graf’s 22.

The victory also earned her $4 million — $3 million for winning the tournament and a $1 million bonus for amassing the most points over the summer in the Emirates Airline U.S. Open Series.

Asked on-court how she felt after her victory, Williams, with tears in her eyes, said, “I’m really emotional to win number 18. I couldn’t have done it in a better place.

” The 32-year-old Williams, who was the No. 1 seed, is considered to have the most dominant serve in the history of women’s tennis. She also has quite a dominant forehand and backhand.
